In 1994, Go-Go’s drummer Gina Schock came upon she had a hollow in her heart that will require open-heart surgery. Naturally, she and her “girl gang” chose to take a hard-partying vacation before she went to the operating room.
“[We] determined to have one giant bash in case I didn’t make it,” Schock notes in “Made in America: All Access with the Go-Go’s” (Black Dog & Leventhal), her new picture memoir. The e book used to be released earlier this week, a couple of days forward of the band’s induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on Saturday.
“We rented a Caddy and a Jag and went to one among our favourite spots in Palm Springs,” she writes of the getaway. “Out of all of the birthday party favors we brought with us, I used to be best allowed pot, Valium and mushrooms. I used to be really high, and we have been all having fun and doing goofy stuff. It was once all in conventional Go-Go’s fashion.”
When Schock got here out of surgery, Go-Go’s lead singer Belinda Carlisle jokingly presented her a post-op bump of coke in the hospital.
“That was once in order that funny,” Schock, 64, advised The Post. “It’s so standard of someone in the band to mention one thing like that at a moment in time where it’s just most definitely the worst factor that would ever occur. She knew that will get me laughing, and it did. And my chest hurt so bad when I laughed!”
Now, after keeping the beat for the Go-Go’s for 40-plus years, Schock and the band could have a “better past due than never” induction into the rock corridor alongside fellow 2021 classmates Jay-Z, Foo Fighters, Carole King, Tina Turner and Todd Rundgren. The group might be performing three songs on the rite, which will be taped at Cleveland’s Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse to air Nov. 20 on HBO.
“We sorta at one level had given up even desirous about getting into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as it simply kept never taking place,” mentioned Schock. “And then unexpectedly when you surrender, it occurs. So we’re fascinated with it, in truth.”
